A health profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, and the effects of these disorders on the functions of the nervous system and general health. There is an emphasis on manual (hands-on) treatments including adjustments of spinal and other joints as well as soft tissue manipulation (World Federation of Chiropractic Definition, 2001).

Current legislation in Ontario (Bill 181) defines chiropractic as “the assessment of conditions related to the spine, nervous system, and joints of the extremities and the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of dysfunctions and disorders arising from the structures or functions of the spine and the effects of those dysfunctions or disorders on the nervous system, primarily by the adjustment of the spinal column or other joints to enhance function.”

Doctors of chiropractic emphasize the promotion of healthy lifestyles through education in health matters, exercise, nutrition, and prevention of injuries.
